Pennsylvania Dutch Wooden Folk Art Wall Plate

Pennsylvania Dutch Wooden Folk Art Wall Plate

This large, round wooden plate was hand painted in dark green with a central decoration depicting a woven basket of tulips, a favorite Pennsylvania Dutch motif. It's surrounded by brush stroke designs in vibrant, but not garish, red, blue and mellow yellow. Additional painted designs decorate the wide flat lip. The rim has a raised edge narrowly striped with red and yellow.

The Pennsylvania Dutch were actually immigrants from Germany who brought with them the tradition of brushstroke painting, called Bauernmalerei (which translated means "peasant painting"). It's not surprising, then, that the hand-lettered word on the plain back of the wall plate is "HANDEGEMALT" which is German for "Hand painted."

The plate measures 12 inches in diameter and 3/4 of an inch high. It weighs about 11 ounces and is in excellent condition, with no damage or visible wear. Ready to hang by the disc plate hanger attached to the upper back, it makes a handsome folk art display on the wall, a shelf or a table.
