This vintage pottery bowl was made by A.R. (Arthur Ray) Cole (1892-1974) in Sanford, North Carolina. Expertly wheel-thrown of red clay, it's beautifully covered in Cole's crystal green glaze, a rutile glaze that was one of his most popular. On this bowl, it's heavily dripped with a rust-brown overglaze.
The bowl measures 5 inches across and 1 3/4 inches high. It weighs 9 ounces and is in excellent condition, with a very minute flake off the upper rim (pictured, with arrow). Cole made this piece during the years 1941-1974 when he operated as A.R. Cole Pottery. (from 1926-1941 it was called Rainbow Pottery). His circular mark that reads 'A.R. Cole Pottery Sanford, N.C.' is stamped into the clay on the bottom. Nice piece from a great Southern potter.
