Vintage GRAY'S POTTERY ENGLAND Copper Lustre Bowl Hand Painted House Pattern

$53.40 $89.00

  • Details
This beautiful, large round bowl was decorated with the "House" pattern in copper lustre by Gray's Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent in England. The two large houses with fences on each side, as well as the birds and trees, were all hand painted with metallic lustre and accented with touches of pink. The rope edge is copper lustre and there is a copper meander pattern on the outside of the bowl.

There are two backstamps on the bottom of the bowl. The black, yellow and green postwar clipper ship mark reads "Hand Painted Gray's Made in Stoke-on-Trent England." This mark dates the bowl to the years 1945 to 1950. Gray's bought undecorated "white ware" from other potteries, in this case from Johnson Brothers. The words "Old English," stamped in blue, denote the shape name, with a blue crown beneath them. The rope trim is a feature of the Old English pattern.

This bowl measures 10 1/4 inches across the top and 3 1/8 inches high. The base is 4 5/8 inches in diameter and the piece weighs 1 3/4 pounds. It's in outstanding condition, with only a small bit of rubbing on the copper rim. There is no damage...no cracks, chips, stains, etc.

The "House" pattern was popular with many English lustreware pottery makers, so this bowl complements groupings of the pattern both antique and vintage.
