Antique MOUSTIERS FRANCE FAIENCE Dish Hand Painted Earthenware

$65.00

  • Details
A très charmant dish from one of the potteries in the Provençal village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, France, this 19th century dish is faience, buff earthenware with a white tin glaze. Beautifully hand painted in shades of green, blue and ocher, it is decorated with the iconic Moustiers bird surrounded by flowers and leaves. The fluted and scalloped rim is sponged in green. It's marked on the underside with the artist's signature painted in ochre and the Roman numeral III in green.

The dish measures about 6 1/4 inches across, is an inch high and weighs just a half pound. It's in nice condition, with no damage to the face of the plate and just a few rough spots and tiny chips on the underside of the edge. There are three stilt marks and the words "MADE IN FRANCE" are impressed into the clay.

This beautiful dish enhances a collection of faience, works so well with Quimper and adds the allure of France to your décor.

    * In French, this dish would be referred to as a "petit plat avec oiseau et fleurs" (small dish with bird and flowers)
