This handsome shorebird was carved by Bob Lee in 2003. The graceful carving is cherry wood, including the bird, base and support rod. Its amber glass eyes with black pupils are inset. All the surfaces are silky smooth. Bob Lee incorporated two knots into the solid body of the bird, lending it even more character. It measures 9 3/4 inches tall to the top of the bird's head, 10 inches long from beak to tail on an oval base 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Weighing in at 12 ounces, this sculptural piece is in excellent condition.
Bob Lee was a prolific folk artist, known for his realistic and detailed birds, who carved over 5,000 in his lifetime. When he lived in Eaton Center, New Hampshire, he trained under master carver Harry Ross. He moved to Cortez, Florida, where he continued to carve until he stopped in 2013 at the age of 92 due to health issues. This carving is hand signed on the bottom of the base, burned into the wood: 'Bob Lee
Cortez, Fl. 2003.' It's a great hand carved decoy for shelf or table.
