This shapely, colorful decoy is a hooded merganser drake, a small duck with a fan-shaped crest that makes his head appear oversized. He has a white breast and chestnut-colored flanks and bright yellow eyes inset into his head that's turned to his left. The hand painting is excellent, with both stain and paint used, so the wood grain shows through in spots. The carving is well-proportioned, with his thin beak having both nail and nares and the plump body ending in a graceful tail. Unsigned, but definitely done by a very good carver.
The decoy measures 10 inches long, about two-thirds the length of the actual duck. Across the breast measures 4 1/2 inches, it's 5 1/2 inches in height and weighs one pound. Overall it's in very good condition, with a few minor scratches the only wear we could find. It's a great display decoy in a nice size for grouping with others or standing alone.
