Joe Mathias (1944-2013) carved this pintail drake duck out of a solid piece of Oregon fir. The feathers on the back and tail are very finely carved and the paint job true to the actual duck. The sides are covered with stain to let the grain show through. The decoy is covered with a high gloss varnish that has protected it since it was carved in 1982. It's hand signed in black ink on the underside "by JOE MATHIAS NATIVE ORE. 1982." and signed J. MATHIAS in small letters carved into the lower edge (shown).
Joe Mathias was born and lived his life in Corvallis, Oregon. There are several of his carvings for sale online but we think this is one of his finest works. The decoy measures 11 1/2 inches long, 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 inches across the breast. It weighs just under a pound and is in excellent condition, with only a few minor dents in the wood in the 43 years since Joe carved this great decoy.
