Chris Gryder (1965--), the eminent master ceramic artist from Vinton, Virginia, created this one-of-a-kind wall tile in 2004-2005. The artist carves a mold out of sand and clay, his signature "earth forming" technique. Over the period of a week, the mold dries and starts dissolving, which allows the tile to release from the mold and be fired. The technique creates intricate bas-relief surfaces like the one here. This process does not allow for multiple castings, so each one is truly unique.
This fascinating textural tile measures 12 inches square, one of Gryder's largest, and weighs 5 pounds, 1 ounce. On the reverse are two molded clay bars, their two holes containing a pre-installed heavy hanging wire, so the tile can be hung as the work of art that it is. Chris Gryder's monogram, consisting of the interlocked letters CG, is stamped into the lower right. The tile is in excellent condition, with no visible wear.
This tile is one of a triptych we acquired; at the time of we're writing this, we have all three. They are available as a triptych for $750.00...please message us if you are interested.
