If ever a carved, painted decoy could be considered a statement piece, this Canada goose is it. Measuring 25 inches long (a real one is 30 to 43 inches long), 14 inches tall to the top of its head and 7 inches across the breast, it weighs a very sturdy 6 pounds, 12 ounces and is in superb condition, with no damage and virtually no wear.
Carved from a solid block of pine, it's signed by artist Theresa Chase and dated '99 on the bottom. The feathers on the rear back and tail are carved, as are the nares and nail on the wide, flat beak. The artist's paint job is excellent, with scratch feather painting on the back and sides and a bright white chinstrap. The inset glass eyes are mostly black with a touch of amber.
The decoy was carved for the Stanstead Collection in Quebec, Canada (appropriately). The company was founded in 1995, selling decorative pieces like this goose. The original Stanstead foil label is on the bottom. It's a handsome display decoy you'll be proud to own.
