This handsome red-breasted merganser drake decoy was carved in the swimming pose and hand painted by Dick and Linda Robinson of Bel Air, Maryland. This husband and wife duo both carve and paint, while Dick specializes in working style decoys and "dead ducks" and Linda specializes in more decorative birds. Linda began making decoys in 1988 since she had always enjoyed working with wood. She developed quickly into an outstanding carver, joining Dick, who was already a well-known decoy maker, collector, and duck hunter. He credits Jim Pierce as the person who taught him and motivated him to carve decoys.
In excellent condition, the wooden decoy measures 13 1/2 inches long, 4 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches across the breast. It weighs 1/2 pound and is hand signed in script on the bottom 'Dick and Linda Robinson 2000.' Both the paint and carving techniques are exceptional, the duck appearing to glide forward, head held high. The blocky colors, the geometric feathers, the head with its painted eyes and black nail...all speak to the superb talents of the Robinsons.
≛≛ Speaking of Jim Pierce, we'll be listing two of his great decoys in the near future.
