Vintage Wooden Loon Cape May County, NJ 1980s Signed

Sorry, this item has sold.

The Delaware River Decoy Company was a short-lived (1983-1987) producer of high-quality wooden decoys founded by award-winning carver Terry McNulty in Cape May County, New Jersey. Made of solid Jersey white cedar, this 1/3 size loon decoy by McNulty has red glass eyes and is hand painted with its summer breeding plumage.

This decoy has a checkered back, iridescent black head and neck and a black bill. There is also a white "necklace" of feathers around the neck and a chinstrap under the beak. Male and female loons have identical plumage, so it's not possible to tell if this is a drake or a hen.

Marked on the bottom with the oval, burned-in stamp of the Delaware River Decoy Company, it's also signed "J. Seibert 92," denoting ownership by Jim and Joan Seibert, collectors and proprietors of Ducks, Etc., also in Cape May County. The Seibels in addition taught decorative bird carving at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

The duck is 9 1/2 inches long, about 1/3 size the adult male loon. It measures about 3 inches at the widest point and 3 3/4 inches high to the top of its head. It weighs 6 ounces and is in excellent damage with virtually no wear.
