Bristol Glass Antique Lidded Apothecary Jar

$175.00

This superb, tall Victorian lidded apothecary jar is made of Bristol glass, a semi-opaque white glass made in the city of Bristol in England. The decorative designs were hand painted in oil-based enamel. They include large pink and small blue flowers with their stems and leaves surrounding a scene of a tree covered island in a lake that mimics the transferware pottery popular in the mid to late 1800's.

The reverse side of the jar displays a spray of gilded leaves. The lid, neck and base are decorated with stripes of the same gold. Since it was hand-blown, there would have been on the bottom a rough pontil mark (the scar left when the glass is broken off the blowpipe), but in this case it has been polished smooth, an indication of a high-quality piece.

This antique glass jar stands 16 inches tall with the lid on and weighs approximately 3 pounds. It's in excellent condition, with the only wear the expected rubbing on the gilding. There are no chips, cracks or repairs and the hand painted decorations are fresh, bright and undamaged. As you can see in our photos, it displays beautifully in a variety of room settings.
