This original signed oil painting is a striking example of abstract cubism. Painted on canvas board in the 1950's, it's signed lower right by the artist "Pynes." The multiple colorful shapes really pop against the moody brown and gray swirling background.
The striated, textured wooden frame is painted in the classic mid-century "blond," a beige with very slight mauve undertones. There are two inner moldings, one in taupe and the other in cream. The frame measures 18 1/2 inches by 22 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches deep. The painting size is 15 1/2 inches by 19 1/2 inches and the artwork weighs about 3 pounds. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition, with some tiny chips on the edges of the frame. It's as found, with the dust paper torn on the back and an old hanging wire installed. It bears the label of a defunct Eugene, Oregon frame shop.
This one of a kind painting looks great, of course, with mid-century modern and post-modern decors, but also makes a wonderful contrast with traditional furnishings.
