This delightful loon decoy was hand carved by William Arthur (Bill) Coleman (1926-2012) in Worton on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Created from a solid piece of cedar with a clear finish, it has inset red eyes, with its head turned slightly to its right. Its open bill is grasping a carved cedar fish with an open mouth and painted black eyes. It's hand signed "Bill Coleman Wooton, Md. Loon" on the bottom. It's undated, but we're guessing late 1980's, early 1990's.

The decoy is in excellent condition with a few minute scratches that our photos have magnified; they do not stand out. It measures 9 1/2 inches long (1/3 the length of an actual loon), 3 3/4 inches to the top of its head and about 2 3/4 inches across the breast. Weighing a mere 6 1/2 ounces, the loon has a flat bottom, so you can display it on a shelf or table or mantel with or without a stand.
