Glowing with metallic bronze swirls and arabesques that catch the light, this pottery jug vase is an unusual find. The cream color clay body is rough to the touch. The small flared mouth, with a rim of matte white glaze; the narrow neck; the shoulder; the arched handle and the 3 1/2 inch diameter bottom--all are unglazed, showing the natural clay. The bottom has two impressed marks: HAND MADE in an oblong and a cypher composed of straight lines in a circle.
The Moorish style paisley designs were carved into the clay and finished with matte and semi-gloss paints. The piece is reminiscent on a small scale of the ceramics by California artist Nora Pineda.
The bud vase is 7 1/2 inches tall and weighs approximately 1 1/4 pounds. It's in excellent condition, with just a bit of "shelf dirt" on the bottom edges, beautiful alone or with a sprig on flowers or foliage.
